Unraveling Mechanism

This innovative nine-panel installation unravels a profound interrogation of contemporary existence through the medium of everyday hardware items. In “Unraveling Mechanism”, Alexander Reben endeavors to deconstruct notions of functionality, reflecting the modern epoch’s ambivalence toward systematic structures and our incessant quest for tangible cohesion. The panels, each punctuated by an array of carefully curated items—levels, latches, reflective tape, velcro, ball transfers, casters, snaps, push pins, and keys—act as individual yet interlinked narrative terrains. The viewer is provoked to grapple with both the banality and profound significance of each object. The levels evoke our primal desire for equilibrium, latches and keys signify accessibility and exclusion, while reflective tape challenges perceptions of visibility and obscurity. The velcro, with its duality of attachment and detachment, invites contemplation on relationships, both ephemeral and lasting. Ball transfers and casters hint at the ebb and flow of movement, transience, and the perpetual dynamics of existence. The snaps, in their decisive and momentary union, beckon thoughts on fleeting connections. Push pins, symbols of both temporary fixation and potential harm, resonate with the paradoxes of our age. The work can be seen as a microcosm of society’s intricate machinery, a subversive take on the bureaucratic tapestry that binds and sometimes stifles. It raises pertinent questions: How do we find balance in an era defined by both rapid change and stubborn stagnation? How do we navigate spaces of inclusion and exclusion, movement and stasis?
