Pulse Machine
An electromechanical sculpture beats once a second while counting down a programmed lifespan.
About the work
Pulse Machine began its programmed life in Nashville, Tennessee, on June 2, 2012, at 6:18 p.m. Made in collaboration with Alicia Eggert, the sculpture was assigned a lifespan of approximately 78 years, based on the average lifespan for babies born in Tennessee at that time.
A kick drum beats 60 times a minute while a mechanical counter displays the heartbeats remaining. A battery-operated clock keeps time when the sculpture is unplugged, and the machine is programmed to stop when the counter reaches zero.
