Life: 44013

Water conditions measured in Boston Harbor seed a changing digital community.

About the work

Life: 44013 uses real-time water turbidity and temperature readings from buoy 44013 in Boston Harbor. These measurements seed a simulated community whose growth responds to the marine conditions.

Colors move through green, blue, and red as the community develops. When it reaches equilibrium, the program calculates a growth score and starts again. The work was presented as public art at the Boston Harbor Pavilion in 2012–2013.
