Delusions of a Time-Traveling Cactus

“Delusions of a Time-Traveling Cactus” is a sculpture that is made from the object it is named after, an actual cactus. The cactus is planted in a mirrored pot that sits on a screen. The screen is playing the movie “Back to the Future” which is also mirrored in a kaleidoscopic style. The idea of a “time-traveling cactus” is an absurd concept, and the sculpture uses this absurdity as a way to comment on the concept of time travel itself and our own understanding of time. The cactus is delusional because it is, of course, not a time traveler, and the title also suggests an element of self-reflection and introspection.

The sculpture is meant to create a reflection of our own desires to achieve the impossible. It suggests that, as humans, we can become delusional in our ideas and thinking, and this is often through our own self-imposed limitations. By juxtaposing a mundane object with the concept of time travel, the sculpture encourages us to examine our relationship to time and to understand our own skewed perceptions of what is possible and what is not. “I chose a cactus because it’s already suited to exist in its own time and space, its physicality communicates its evolution over time, and it can not go back in time to change what it is. But, by being planted in an ambiguous environment of mirrors and digital screens, self-reflection and magnified doubt is explored.”
